Batton Lasgh signs his new book, “Mr. Negativity,” November 20th 7-9 PM

NOVEMBER 20th 7-9 PM
BOOK SIGNING

Mr. Negativity Heads for Meltdown!

We all know someone like him: a person who is able to see the dark lining in any fluffy white cloud, someone who can put a damper on any celebration. But this particular guy has such an extremely negative attitude that he begins to actually repel everything and everyone around him.

Meet “Mr. Negativity,” one of the most challenging clients yet for the law firm of Wolff & Byrd, Counselors of the Macabre. This character is featured in the title story from Exhibit A Press’s new trade paperback collection: Mr, Negativity and Other Tales of Supernatural Law, by Batton Lash.

The debut celebration for this new trade will be held at Meltdown Comics on Thursday, November 20. Cartoonist Lash will be on hand to sign copies of Mr. Negativity as well as two previous books in the Supernatural Law series, Sonovawitch! and The Vampire Brat. All who attend the event will receive a special limited edition print by Lash (as long as supplies last).

Mr. Negativity collects issues 31–36 of Supernatural Law and issue 3 of Mavis, World’s Greatest Secretary. Lash was nominated for the 2003 Harvey Special Award for Humor for the issues in this collection, and Supernatural Law #35 was nominated for Best Single Issue. That issue features a critically acclaimed silent story, “Words Don’t Do IT Justice.”

Among the other stories in the collection are “Trail of the Trial of the Mummy,” in which Wolff & Byrd travel to a small Nevada gambling town where a mummy has come to life in a casino; “Huberis, the Dybbuk,” in which a misogynistic demon gets religion and sues to be accepted at a church; and “The Co-Inkydinks,” in which Wolff & Byrd must enter the dreams of comatose horror writer Steven Gink. In the added bonus Mavis issue, the firm’s secretary splits into three personas, creating a few identity issues to say the least!

Supernatural Law has been called “a comic for people who don’t read comics.” As Exhibit A editor and co-publisher Jackie Estrada notes, “The self-contained stories in the series appeal to people who like a good read, with great plot twists, interesting characters, wacky humor, and satirical pokes at pop culture. And people who have followed the series for years enjoy the ‘back story’ of the characters’ personal lives.”

Mr. Negativity sports an introduction by Tom DeHaven, author of the cult favorite Dugan trilogy of novels that take place in the world of comics and pop culture: Funny Pages, Derby Dugan’s Depression Funnies, and Dugan Underground. The 196-page book lists at $15.95.

Meltdown 10th Anniversary

Meltdown’s 10th Anniversary

Meltdown Comics & Collectibles Celebrates its 10th Anniversary

HOLLYWOOD — Ten years ago, Meltdown Comics & Collectibles was little more than the hope of two fans who took a risk and used their personal collection of comic books and Spider-Man memorabilia to open their own store.

Now the dream of Gaston Dominguez-Letelier and Ilia Carson-Letelier is one of the most respected comic book stores in the world. A must-see pop culture destination for some and a valuable research spot for others, Meltdown has become a key component in the cultural sphere of
Los Angeles.

“When I arrive, the store is stunning. No leftover eventspapers soaking up rain leaks. No chewing gum stuck on the sawdust covered floor,” said longtime Meltdown customer Don Murphy, producer of comics-related films such as From Hell and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. “Well-lit, well stocked, friendly. A place I actually want to go to.

“Meltdown will celebrate its anniversary with an all out Halloween party 7 p.m. Oct. 31 at the store, 7522 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood. The event will feature quite a few freebies and a couple of surprises. Reservations are not required.

“We are both so excited to able to share this milestone with our customers, family and friends,” the business partners said. “As comic book fans it has been an exciting adventure to watch our tiny little mom and pop shop grow into the largest comic book store on the west coast “

Meltdown has grown from 1,500 to 9,000 square-feet over the years and though it relocated three times, it remained on the same Sunset Boulevard block.

Constant too was its alien mascot, “Mel,” designed by cartoonist Dan Clowes. And of course, each move brought with it even more room for comics, toys, collectibles, clothing for young women and, through Baby Melt, gifts and books for infants and children.

The new spot also allowed the store to expand its award winning and innovative window displays.

The cosmopolitan approach to the core stock – comic books – has earned praise from around the globe.

Among awards won over the years are a “Best of LA” nod from Los Angeles Magazine, top votes from the Sci-Fi Channel and a Will Eisner “Spirit of Comics” Retailer Award.

“Meltdown has one of the best selections of comic books new and old that I have ever seen,” said Eric Reynolds, spokesman for Fantagraphics Books, one of the industry’s top alternative publishers. “Ilia and Gaston are more than just progressive business people. They’re also tremendous activists for the art form. Their obvious love of the art form is a rarity in the commerce-dominated world of retailing, and
cannot be underestimated in an age where we all are desperate to reach out to potential new readers.”

For their part, Ilia and Gaston plan to continue growing their business, with plans to move into new realms such as toy design and manufacturing and publishing.

” With our success rate as high as it has been, look for total world domination by Meltdown in the future,” they said.

“ And of course, an ever increasing selection of the best comics and comic-related merchandise”
