Comic Foundry Video Blog

I’m late on this. Comic Foundry, an Internet comics magazine, does these little video blogs from time to time. In this installment, Comic Foundry contributor Tim Leong takes a shot at Wizard Magazine. Admirable, right? Unfortunately, he tries to channel his Inner Snarky Journalist, fails miserably, and ends up coming off as a tool.

Of course, the worst part is that he completely squanders the opportunity by criticizing the most superficial problems with Wizard and ignoring the bigger picture. He doesn’t even address the fact that Wizard ultimately does nothing to elevate the industry and is biased journalism of the most blatant kind.
There’s already a couple parodies of this floating around the net, one specifically is to promote Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ new series “Criminal.”

Yeah, I mentioned it was old — in the first sentence. And there’s no doubt that many people read and enjoy Wizard, but that doesn’t mean I’m not aloud to have an opinion.

    Especially when I’m right.

wizard isn’t even needed anymore. there’s the internet now. we hear our comic book news two months before wizard comes out. we read it for free! it would be different if wizard provided excellence in journalism, but they only exist to stroke the ego of guys like bendis and millar. bah. read the comics journal.

Has their hot writer’s list ever changed? it’s the same fuckin’ dudes all the time just the order changes as to who is doing an interesting run on something. I think I’ve seen Winick on the list too which just trivializes it even more… Actually it doesn’t just trivialize it, it undermines it completely.

I remember the good ol’ days of checking the price guide to see how much the platinum, gold, and silver covers for McFarlane’s Spider-Man were going for. Those were the days!

Aaron’s right though, it’s a useless rag due to so much great coverage (free) of the industry done by places like Newsarama, Comic Book Resources, etc.

Wizard is the kind of magazine I’d have read when I was 14. Luckily around that time I happened to find a Comic Journal with an interview with Bill Watterson- didn’t realize how rare that was at the time- as well as a sketchbook section featuring the illustrator Brad Holland. This discovery saved me from buying Wizard and getting caught up in gold and silver covers of shitty comics nobody even reads anymore. I agree that the instant press release capability of Newsarama sort of makes Wizard irrelevant except for those looking for inflated price guides and lists of “hot” writers- as if readers can’t figure out for themselves who deserves that label. And if you’re looking for lists of the “Greatest Comic Book Fights of All Time” you can find plenty of blogs, messageboards and podcasts that discuss that sort of thing. Maybe when the magazine goes under/changes focus they’ll be forced to sell off/change their conventions and let somebody run them who actually gives a damn about promoting non-Big 2 comics creators and companies.
