Saturday, January 27th, 2007

In this week’s DC Nation, Editor Eddie Berganza made the following plea for women to read Supergirl, which I post both for the debate I hope it will spark as well as the fact it announces that I’ll be co-writing Supergirl with Joe Kelly as of Issue 16:

“Women. Who needs them?

Well, actually… I do.

DC Cancels Ennis/Robertson’s “The Boys”

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

NEWSARAMA reports that DC has cancelled Wildstorm’s The Boys by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. Issues 7-10 and the trade collecting 1-6 will not be shipped, even though they’ve already been solicited.

The Boys #6 was Wildstorm’s third top-selling title in December, placing at 81 on Diamond’s Top 300 list. DC declined to comment on the series or cancellation.

Robertson had this to say:

“It became obvious that DC was not the right home for The Boys. DC is being good about reverting our rights so we can find a new publisher and we’re in the process of doing that now. I’m continuing to work exclusively for DC in the meantime. I want to thank Scott Dunbier and Ben Abernathy at Wildstorm for all their hard work.”

Joon-ho Bong’s “The Host” - A (sorta) Review

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

thehost1_large.thumbnail.gif

*Warning – I tried to keep the spoilers to a minimum. Proceed at your own risk.

I’m not a critic, but here it is – It is tha’ bomb!

Do yourself a favor and see this movie, you won’t be disappointed. Regardless of your choice of genre, love /hate of commercial or art house fare, this film won’t do you wrong.

It is so original in execution that there is a gem in it for everyone. I watched it at my homeboy Cruz’s house on their 50-inch HD TV, with his roomies and some friends (all filmmakers), and we were all blown away. There is nothing like discovering a movie from a filmmaker who is so adept at his craft that you have to break out pen and paper and take notes.

There is no wasted moment or device in any given frame of any scene. Everything that is established comes into play; the film is wrought with symbolism, great characters, and the best cinema monster I’ve seen in ages (honestly, you see the thing become a better predator as it learns to utilize it’s environment and the available food source – humans).

The film breaks many rules of the genre – won’t name ‘em here because it will be spoiler city. The Korean DVD is out and available at Drunken Master… not sure when the American DVD (via Magnolia Pictures) will be out, but if you have a Region free player, it’s worth seeing now.

By the way, I heard that Universal purchased the remake rights to the film – so expect a studio friendly version on the horizon (no comment). The good thing is that Joon-ho Bong is writing the “remake.”

Here’s a link to details and a trailer:
