Caleb’s Pick of the Week - Doom Patrol Volume 6: Planet Love

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

This is the final volume of Grant Morrison’s fabled run on the book, a run trapped somewhere between the churning meta-ideas of his Invisibles and the wide-screen heroics of his JLA, trapped and then heavily dosed with absurdity and crooked horror. The whole thing reads like a fever dream, but we’ve all have fevers before and this book makes more sense than we’d like to admit. So put down the latest event-leading-into-another-big-event-which-is-in-turn-merely-the-prelude-to-yet-another-event and the current completely-not-brand-new-throwback-to-the-Silver-Age and pick up something that’s still forward-thinking and spine-tingling 15 years after it first came out.

“The Perry Bible Fellowship” is not a church, although it has been known to inspire a certain cultish zeal amongst its fans. The “Perry Bible Fellowship” is in fact a strange and nearly always surreal newspaper strip and Webcomic by Nicholas Gurewitch. Somewhat reminiscent of “The Far Side” in terms of its fierce weirdness, “Perry Bible Fellowship” is composed of vignettes highlighting the strangeness of life, religion and politics in a manner sometimes macabre, sometimes with a childlike glee, and illustrated in a variety of art styles.

By far the funniest book I’ve read this year, Don’t let the colorful cover fool you, it’s not for kids.
Stop by, take a gander, few copies left.

Caleb’s Pick of the Week: Umbrella Academy #4

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

Umbrella Academy is what comics are supposed to be: big shiny ideas captured at a madcap pace with the net of beautiful art and forced giggling and screaming into 22-page capsules for quick and easy download directly into readers’ brains.

Youngblood #1 Arrives at Meltdown

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

“There was a time — not long ago — when they were the hottest thing going.  They held press conferences.  They dated supermodels.  They invaded foreign nations.  They were more popular than Jesus.”

But there’s no need to take a trip in the Way Back Machine –  Youngblood returns.  Meltdown managed to get its hands on some early copies of issue #1, before its next Wednesday release.  Veteran comics writer Joe Casey, with artist Derec Donovan and colorist Bill Crabtree, revive Rob Liefeld’s early-nineties, million-selling comic book.

Original teammates like Shaft, Badrock, and Die Hard are back.  And they’re facing their most nefarious villains yet… Nielsen ratings, endorsement contracts, merchandising and public perception.  21st Century-style.  Casey actually manages to deliver about as a good a story as you could ask for out of Youngblood.  There’s some moments that are quite funny (intentionally) and he’s found some interesting angles in the superhero-as-celebrity idea, in spite of similar books on the market like Matt Fraction and Barry Kitson’s The Order.

Donovan turned in impressive work last year on Connor Hawke: Dragon’s Blood and continues to execute clean, solid storytelling.  He does a nice job of accommodating Casey’s plentiful script which will satisfy readers that are irritated by the current state of decompression in comics.  You definitely feel like you got your $2.99 worth.

We have both covers in stock, and judging by how Youngblood has been selling today, there’s some nineties Image hold-overs that are still out for blood.
