(Guest post by comics writer/Meltcaster/Hollywood historian/man-about-town Sam Humphries!)
Does anyone recognize this?
It’s the parking lot behind Meltdown in the 1950s! Looking north east up the alley. The PE railroad used to run down there on a private, right of way track. You can see it on this map:
LA used to have tons of public transportation train tracks, and although the companies are long out of business, we see where they used to run every day. This is a great example…if you look at Google Maps you can still see the arc of the train tracks…even where they’ve built over it, you can see oddly shaped buildings along the path:
Santa Monica in Beverly Hills is another great example…we have Regular Santa Monica and Little Santa Monica today because a train used to run in between them.
Ghost traces of an earlier LA…
(Special thanks to Dennis Culver, who originally pointed Sam to this message board thread, where this find was made!)
