Down in Front is a weekly audio podcast in commentary form, hosted by four film industry professionals and full-time fanboys. Every episode is dedicated to the discussion and analysis of a movie – and we’re pulling out all the stops for our first-ever live event at Meltdown, the 100th episode of Down in Front.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is a crucial film for us, and for people like us. How does a movie attain a status of ubiquitous, wholesale greatness? How does it infect the popular culture and leave spin-offs in its wake for thirty years? How much free beer is it going to take for us to simply give up and start making out with the fedora?

We look forward to a night of entertainment, much love and many laughs, as we discuss every angle of this cinematic candy bar with a live audience of folks who love it as much as we do.

Los Angeles, CA 90046 (map)
Admission: $8 at door.

Are you tired of going to Meltdown, on Wednesday, to pick up your comics alone? Does your Mage not have a warrior to protect him? Does the arrow on your  “There is no intelligent life” t-shirt not point to anyone?

Well Meltdown Comics is here to help your lonely heart. We are holding the first ever nerd speed dating event. This is no April Fools joke.  For $20 you get to be a part of fun night where single men and women with similar interests get to know each other ASAP. There will also be fun prizes, some comedy bits and music.

How it works: What is speed dating you ask? The ladies sit down and every 3 minutes gents rotate. You introduce yourself. Get a feel for the other person. The ladies take notes on all the men the meet. At the end of the night the sheet with notes are given to Meltdown. If there is a match we let you know then you go on a date, you get married and you have kids you dress up like Hobbits for Halloween.

Of course we will be adding some of the spice that you expect from any event at Meltdown. There will be wine, trivia questions, prizes, comedians and much much more.

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011, Hollywood, CA:

Former Brand X editor and current LA Times feature writer Deb Vankin signs her new graphic novel “Poseurs” at Meltdown Comics.

ABOUT THE BOOK Poseurs follows three teenagers from distinctly different corners of Los Angeles who meet in the underworld of LA nightlife and Hollywood parties – and get in over their heads! From the graffiti-tagged streets of LA’s eastside to the bloated, billion dollar mansions of Bel Air, it’s a full-blown party noir!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR DEBORAH VANKIN is a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times, where she covers arts & culture, entertainment and nightlife. Prior to that, she launched — and served as Editor-in-Chief of — the LA Times’ alt weekly publications/websites, Metromix LA and Brand X.  Deborah’s work has also appeared in LA Weekly, Variety and The New York Times, among many other places. Her essays and short fiction have been produced at Spoken Interludes and Word Theatre in Los Angeles. Originally from Philadelphia, POSEURS is her first foray into comics. She’s currently working on her second graphic novel.
