Earlier this May, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 managed to achieve the second largest opening weekend of 2017 after Beauty and the Beast, earning approximately $146 million. While this is undoubtedly impressive, GotG Vol. 2 doesn’t even touch the top five highest grossing opening weekend Marvel Comics releases. The top spot belongs to Marvel’s The Avengers which raked in an estimated $207,438,708, followed by Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Iron Man 3 and Spiderman 3.

We don’t really understand how the last two got in there, but the point is these movies are incredibly popular. Of course, the comic book movie renaissance isn’t limited to Marvel Comics, as the DC Universe is also managing to gain a vast audience. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice alone managed to create an estimated revenue of $166,007,347 during its opening weekend, while upcoming titles like Wonder Woman and Justice League are sure to attract plenty of fans upon their release.

After the massive amounts of success these movies have achieved, it is really no surprise that comic books continue to have an impact on other aspects of mainstream media. This is especially true for other elements of so-called “nerd culture” such as online gaming. We’re not just talking about your average online MMO or RPG games that have been created by the comic book companies themselves either.

As recently as October 2016, iGaming developers Playtech released a collection of six games based on the classic Batman television series, all of which can be found at online iGaming operators including bgo casino. Each title focuses on a particular Batman rival or ally including Catwoman, The Joker, Mr Freeze, The Riddler, The Penguin and finally, Batgirl. While the Batman TV show was very popular in the past and continues to inspire memes to this day, it’s difficult to imagine such titles would have been created outside of the comic book resurgence we are experiencing today.

Some of the better blockbuster movies also get their own slots upon their release, with The Dark Knight video slot appearing on a number of sites including Slot Boss.  Occasionally there will even be original titles such as Transformers: Battle for Cybertron, which can be found on Pocket Fruity and other websites, as the iGaming industry is never one to miss out on a good franchise.

Of course, there are plenty of comic book-based online games that have been created or funded by the companies themselves as well. For instance, there’s Marvel Heroes – a free-to-play massively multiplayer online action role-playing game where you can play as almost any of your favourite Marvel characters to complete quests. DC Comics also has their own version of this named DC Universe Online, where you actually get to choose whether you’re a villain or a superhero, a decision that can lead you down any number of different paths.

As the cinematic universe of comic book characters continues to expand, we can only hope they will influence the online gaming world even further. After all, since there are sure to be many more movies in the future, hopefully we can get a couple more slots on bgo or MMO RPGs to play between releases.
