You have been wanting to make your own comic.  You draw well.  You don’t draw well.  You don’t draw at ALL.

It matters not.

Join the next Meltdown University Creating Comics series and you will learn to do your own bold and exciting minicomic or your own brash and inventive comics script.  We will teach you the ways of Comics Fu.  You will understand the secret techniques of visual storytelling, page design, story structure, and creating your own style.   All you need is the desire.  (And a few bucks.)

The next class starts on Wednesday, August 17th so sign up now if you’re interested!  To join or for more information, go here:

One day you too may say, “The circle is now complete. When I left you I was but the learner, now I am the master!”

Red Alert to parents who are looking for a fun activity for their kids to do.  Starting July 12, at 4pm, artist Donna Letterese will be teaching a class called Drawing Comics For Kids.  This is going to be a really fun workshop environment where kids’ creativity will be mined and encouraged while they explore various aspects of comics.  Children will design fantastical or down-to-Earth characters, draw comics stories panel by panel, and learn by reading cool and fun comics. Ages are between 7 and 10, though we may open that range a little depending on enrollment. So grab the kids and bring them to Meltdown for some summer fun!

Donna is an artist, comics editor, and tutor and has been teaching art to kids for years. Her work has been exhibited in galleries all over the city.

Classes will meet on Tuesdays from 4 to 6pm for 10 sessions.  For more information go here and scroll down:

Saturday at Meltdown was a good day for budding comic creators. The webcomics class got off to a solid start.  Geoffrey Golden, webcomics guru and editor-in-chief of The Devastator, discussed some basics and gave an overview of the webcomics world to the students there for the first class.

Alert to anyone interested in webcomics!

The class is still accepting students so if you’re interesting in joining up do it now.  Go to this link and scroll down for more info and to sign up.

Also on Saturday, students from Otis College of Art and Design who are in the comics class taught there by Meltdown University instructor and director Jim Higgins, came down and sold the comics they did as final projects as well as art prints and original sketches. Plenty of good work was on display and bought and enjoyed by customers.  Meltdown purchased minicomics from each of the students and they’re on sale now in the store.  Remember to check out the minicomics in the Melt U area to see interesting and unusual work done by the DYI crowd here in LA and from all over!

As it nears its third anniversary, Meltdown University is about to more than double the amount of classes offered!  In addition to our Creating Comics and Drawing Basics classes, we’re announcing two new classes and will be adding two more in just a couple of weeks.

First up is The Webcomics Workshop. The class will meet for eight weeks and will cover developing your comic idea, designing the page, marketing, and more.  It will be taught by Geoffrey Golden, who has written for National Lampoon, Warner Bros., and Comedy.com.  Geoffrey is also the writer of the popular webcomic Leetstreet Boys, and is the Editor-In-Chief of the bold, exciting… dare I say, brash? anthology of comics and comedy called The Devastator.  The class will meet on Saturdays from 12 to 3pm and starts June 4th so sign up now!

The second is Drawing Comics For Kids. Moms, Dads, caretakers, if you’ve got kids between the ages of 7 and 10 years old, we’ve got a place for them to learn about drawing and to practice making their own comics. It will be fun and a great way for them to express their creativity and ideas.  The class will be taught by Donna Letterese, who has taught kids how to make comics for years, is a comics editor, a tutor, and a talented artist herself.  Donna’s art has appeared in juried exhibits and gallery shows all around the city.  The class will meet on Tuesdays from 4 to 6pm and starts July 5th.
