In the outlandish dark comedy SUPER, James Gunn has created what is perhaps the definitive take on self-reflexive superheroes.

When sad-sack loser Frank (Rainn Wilson) sees his ex-addict wife (Liv Tyler) willingly snatched by a seductive drug dealer (Kevin Bacon), he finds himself bereft and wholly unable to cope. But soon he decides to fight back under the guise of a DIY superhero called Crimson Bolt. With a hand-made suit, a wrench and a crazed sidekick named Boltie (Ellen Page), the Crimson Bolt beats his way through the mean streets of crime in hopes of saving his wife. The rules were written a long time ago: You are not supposed to molest children, cut lines or key cars; if you do, prepare to face the wrath of the Crimson Bolt!

No stranger to rebel filmmaking, James Gunn cut his teeth writing for Troma before making his directing debut with 2006′s SLITHER. In a similar vein, his follow-up feature combines absurd humor with balls-out violence to create something that is both unashamed and inimitable. But this time Gunn adds a new ingredient, one that is dark, dramatic and subversive to the core.

GRAPHATION FILM FESTIVAL No. 1 HITS LA

After a continued run of successful events at the Hive Gallery & Studios, this January 14-16 at the Downtown Independent, Graphation, the short film festival that adapts films into comic books, will hold its first ever film festival with Graphation No. 1. The three day event is full of the comic book like thrills that only Graphation can bring.

The events begin Friday at 8:00 PM with an intimate evening of films and filmmakers, featuring the short films and the very people who make them, followed by Q &A time, as well as time to interact and talk person to person. Filmmakers include Star Wars Family Guy director Dominic Polcino. Tickets are $12.

Saturday is a full day for Graphation, beginning at 1:00 PM and then at 3:00 PM with a match made in puppet heaven as Graphation partners with the magnanimous daughter of Jim Henson, as Heather Henson presents her own special gathering of puppet films with Handmade Puppet Dreams. Split into two blocks and featuring the absolute best of HMPD films Heather and Graphation come together to bring a new generation of puppet filmmakers to audiences. Tickets are $8 each show, or $12 for both shows. The evening continues with The Ultimate Graphation Experience at 6:00 PM. Featuring a number of Graphationʼs finest films, including folk rocker Josh Ritterʼs video for The Curse, all culminating with a Marvel Vs. DC Chessboxing, a sport itself born from a graphic novel. Tickets are $15.

Things wind down Sunday at 2:00 PM in full 3D as the LA 3D Club and Graphation team up to bring the future of film to Graphationʼs present. Followed by the announcement of the Graphation award winning films, judged by screen writer Jon Betuel (The Last Starfighter), screen writer Coleman Hough (Steven Soderberghʼs Full Frontal), and author Ned Vizzini (Itʼs Kind Of A Funny Story now a film staring Zach Galifianakis).

Tickets are $12
The All Access Festival Pass is $45
