 The book

Throughout his 25-year career, alternative cartoonist/screenwriter Daniel Clowes has always been ahead of artistic and cultural movements. In the late 1980s his groundbreaking comic book series Eightball defined indie culture with wit, venom, and even a little sympathy. With each successive graphic novel (Ghost WorldDavid BoringIce HavenWilsonMister Wonderful ), Clowes has been praised for his emotionally compelling narratives that reimagine the ways that stories can be told in comics. The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist is the first monograph on this award-winning, New York Times–bestselling creator, compiled with his complete cooperation. It includes all of Clowes’s best-known illustrations as well as rare and previously unpublished work, all reproduced from the original art, and also includes essays by noted contributors such as designer Chip Kidd and cartoonist Chris Ware.

First, he was Hannibal King in BLADE: TRINITY. Then he was Deadpool in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. And next year he’ll be Hal Jordan in GREEN LANTERN. Quite the comics-to-film résumé. But a lesser-known Ryan Reynolds comics tie-in was his turn in the 2005 film WAITING…, where he co-starred with our own Meltdown Mel!

The film also stars Anna Faris, who went on to co-star with Mel in SMILEY FACE, Justin Long, who went on to co-star with Mel in LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD and Chi McBride, who currently stars in the TV series HUMAN TARGET, based on the DC Comic of the same name.

Quite the résumé, indeed.

Check out this scene from Hit Parade, comics master Joe Casey’s debut as a screenwriter/director.

That location looks familiar!

Jerome Archer is a retired hit man living the straight life as a retail bookstore manager. When he is coerced by a pair of industrious United States Census Bureau agents to hunt down a dangerous, young contract killer, Jerome suddenly has a life-altering choice to make: will he be forced to return to his old, murderous ways… or will he find a new way out?
