Get out your tiny scissors and microscopic glue! We need a MILLION Minis!

What we at False Start Presents are trying to do here is to foster a sense of community among DIYers in Los Angeles and help that attitude spread to a wider audience. We want to introduce DIY, especially zines, to people who are curious but hesitant, and then we want them to have a place to talk to people who have been doing it for years.

There is a vibrant zine-making scene in L.A., but like everything else in this wonderful city, zinesters are separated by miles and miles. We want these workshops to be events that bring people together to share what they know. We want to give people a voice and let them know that whatever they want to say, someone will listen.

The way we’re hoping to foster this awesome productive togetherness is through monthly workshops. The workshops build to an exhibition– for example, after two silkscreening workshops, we’ll have a fashion show; after four zine-making workshops, we’ll have an zine show.

Join us in the gallery at Meltdown Comics from 12:30 – 2:30 on Saturday, February 19th to read zines, meet other zine-y people and make your very own mini!

Who is Team False Start? Well I’m glad you asked. Team False Start consists of four lovely ladies, the likes of which being Rhea (of Magick Orchids and Only for the Open Minded), Simon Sotelo (of HireSimon.com), Bianca Barragan (of the zines Things You Can Learn When You Listen to Strangers and Trust Me, I Know What I’m Doing), and yours truly, Meredith Wallace.

RSVP to the event on Facebook. See you there!

Really Los Angeles, after 18 yrs in business thru the triumphs and the tears — you have given me lots of both. — I love you, fear you and admire all the chances you have given my store and myself to renew, rebuild, and recharge!

If I was a writer I would polish this and have a great ending for it, but I am not. Just a fan of comic books that appreciates your continued support and business!

So you’ve sold a script and you’re excited.  But what’s the next one going to be? What if you’re thinking about doing a superhero story and you’re not a comics fan?  Or you didn’t grow up reading about Superman, Spider-man, and Batman?

What if you’re an aspiring screenwriter and you think you’d like to break in with a script about people with super powers?

There have been more and more movies and TV shows made about superheroes that have been good and successful. There are ones made from existing comics characters Batman: Dark Knight, Watchmen, the three Spider-man movies, lesser known ones from comics like Wanted, Astroboy, as well ones made from original screenplays that are either about super people, like The Incredibles,Hancock, or My Super Ex-Girlfriend, or films and shows that draw heavily on superhero mythology and traditions like The Matrix, Buffy, Heroes, and Chuck.

Here at Meltdown University, we know superheroes.  Melt U head instructor and Program Director Jim Higgins has 16 years of experience in the comics business, including six years as an editor and assistant editor at DC Comics, 12 years as a comics teacher, a BA and MA in cinema studies, and five years experience teaching film studies at The City University of New York.  His  workshop will give you a grounding in story structure and then an overview of the history, mythology, and various aspects of the superhero story so you can do your own and do it well.

If you’re interested in doing a script about how heroes can better society, or how power corrupts, and the superhero story is going to be your vehicle, sign up for this one day seminar.  We’ll make you do painful homework in preparation like watch good movies and read a couple of great graphic novels. We think you’ll have fun and learn something in the process.

Sunday November 21 from 11am to 6pm.

Go to this link to sign up before the workshop fills up!
