Tilda Swinton in SNOWPIERCER
Making his English-language debut, Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho (The Host, Mother) has crafted a darkly lavish science-fiction thriller that boasts an esteemed international cast led by Tilda Swinton, Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Octavia Spencer and Korean stars Song Kang-ho and Ko Asung.

Humanity’s fate after a second ice age hits Earth is confinement in a state-of-the-art train as it races around the frozen globe. For the survivors in the train’s forward compartments, the endless voyage is a breeze. But for the poor sequestered in the back of the rumbling express, the picture isn’t as rosy. Crammed in a state of permanent Dickensian squalor and subsisting on gooey protein blocks, they are closely monitored by armed guards and hectored by a bespectacled, snaggletoothed overseer. But when a band of desperate rebels begin to force their way to the front of the train, life as everyone has known it goes off the rails. Bong Joon-ho’s film astounds with its array of interior landscapes, hairpin narrative turns, mordant wit and breathtaking set pieces all within the confines of thundering railcars.

A box office smash in Korea and France, Snowpiercer arrives in America at the same time as its source, graphic novel Le Transperceneige, is translated into English, 30 years after it was published in France.

2013, 125 minutes, color, DCP | Directed by Bong Joon-ho; written by Bong Joon-ho and Kelly Masterson; with Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner, Ko Asung, John Hurt and Ed Harris.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Los Angeles Film Festival returns June 11–19 to L.A. LIVE. Don’t miss out on red carpet premieres, conversations, live music, free outdoor screenings and films from around the world. Meltdown Comics is proud to host the screenings of Jossy’s and Harmontown. In Jossy’s, five young women reluctantly agree to join a secret team of super heroes and battle intergalactic evils in the broad parody of Japanese sentai shows like Kamen Rider and the Power Rangers. Harmontown follows NBC’s Community writer/producer Dan Harmon as he hits the road with his popular podcast, accompanied by his co-hosts, his girlfriend and a whole lot of baggage. International Premiere
Directed By: Yuichi Fukuda
Screenwriter: Yuichi Fukuda
Cast: Mirei Kiritani, Mina Fujii, Mitsuki Takahata, Kasumi Arimura, Mizuki Yamamoto, Jiro Sato, Ken Yasuda, Sarutoki Minagawa

Five reluctant young women are recruited to become Earth’s last line of defense in this broad parody of Japanese Super Sentai shows like Kamen Rider and the countless iterations of the Power Rangers. Wearing the prerequisite color-coded uniforms, the team must fight off intergalactic villains like StinkBug and Mutant Mucus despite an utter lack of training. Even more problematic, however, is discovering that alien invasions are terribly inconvenient when they arise during a first date or trip to the salon, forcing our heroes to choose between their personal lives and saving the planet. (Spoiler: The planet doesn’t always win.)

Yuichi Fukuda, director of last year’s one-two punch of Kid Police and HK: Forbidden Super Hero, packs his latest with affectionate jabs at a beloved genre, awesomely lo-fi monster suits and plenty of superhero silliness.

Summer Showcase
(USA, 2014, 101 mins, DCP)
Directed By: Neil Berkeley

Screenwriter: Neil Berkeley
Producer: David Heiman
Cinematographer: Ryan Carmody
Editor: James Andre Leche
Music: Ryan Elder
Featuring: Dan Harmon, Jeff B. Davis, Erin McGathy, Spencer Crittenden

On the surface, Harmontown is a road movie about the boozy live shows of the popular podcast of the same name. Capturing backstage shenanigans and philosophical musings along the way, the film follows a band of misfits that include TV writer/producer Dan Harmon, actor/comic Jeff B. Davis, Dungeon Master Spencer Crittenden and Harmon’s girlfriend, writer/comic Erin McGathy, as they tour the country.

Ultimately, however, it’s a portrait of the talented Harmon–a riveting blend of righteous arrogance and destructive self-loathing–whose seemingly flippant disregard for the TV industry is matched only by his desire to be deified within it. Director Neil Berkeley is as unrelenting as Harmon is willing to pursue candor at all costs as he battles with demons and deadlines. The resulting fireworks make it easy to understand the passionate and heartfelt following Harmon has amassed.

Meltdown Comics friends Amity and American Cinematheque announce Beyond Fest!

Creative collective Amity and the American Cinematheque announced today that they are partnering to create Beyond Fest, a festival featuring the best in world genre programming, October 13 – 27, 2013 at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

Goblin-Poster-01

Dedicated to delivering the elite in horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and badass cinema, Beyond Fest will globally program a diverse and eclectic mix of gala premieres, rare retrospectives, and special events, all of which are anchored in bringing firsts to the community of genre fans in Los Angeles. Beyond Fest’s programming slate launches with the announcement of the first Los Angeles performance of Italian Prog Rock pioneers Goblin, who rose to cult fame through their work with horror maestro Dario Argento.

“We’ve always wanted to bring a world-class genre festival to Los Angeles, so we figured we’d do something about it with Beyond Fest,” said Christian Parkes, principle at Amity. “As fans ourselves we want to create something that is comparable to the very best festivals out there, and partnering with the American Cinematheque allows us to do exactly that: we want to give the film community here direct access to what others are seeing around the world.”

“There are so many great films being produced in every corner of the world, and we want to reflect that when programming Beyond Fest,” said Grant Moninger, American Cinematheque programmer. “By focusing on world cinema, it gives us the opportunity not only to select the very best films out there, but it also allows us to program films that might not be seen in a theater in the US.”

Reflecting Beyond Fest’s  commitment to original and diverse programming is the announcement of Goblin  performing on October 22nd at the Egyptian Theatre. Playing Los Angeles for the first time in their 40 year history, Goblin will perform a full, live set pulled from their most iconic scores, including: Dario Argento’s giallo classics Suspiria, Tenebrae, and Deep Red, and George A.
