As it nears its third anniversary, Meltdown University is about to more than double the amount of classes offered!  In addition to our Creating Comics and Drawing Basics classes, we’re announcing two new classes and will be adding two more in just a couple of weeks.

First up is The Webcomics Workshop. The class will meet for eight weeks and will cover developing your comic idea, designing the page, marketing, and more.  It will be taught by Geoffrey Golden, who has written for National Lampoon, Warner Bros., and Comedy.com.  Geoffrey is also the writer of the popular webcomic Leetstreet Boys, and is the Editor-In-Chief of the bold, exciting… dare I say, brash? anthology of comics and comedy called The Devastator.  The class will meet on Saturdays from 12 to 3pm and starts June 4th so sign up now!

The second is Drawing Comics For Kids. Moms, Dads, caretakers, if you’ve got kids between the ages of 7 and 10 years old, we’ve got a place for them to learn about drawing and to practice making their own comics. It will be fun and a great way for them to express their creativity and ideas.  The class will be taught by Donna Letterese, who has taught kids how to make comics for years, is a comics editor, a tutor, and a talented artist herself.  Donna’s art has appeared in juried exhibits and gallery shows all around the city.  The class will meet on Tuesdays from 4 to 6pm and starts July 5th.

Get out your tiny scissors and microscopic glue! We need a MILLION Minis!

What we at False Start Presents are trying to do here is to foster a sense of community among DIYers in Los Angeles and help that attitude spread to a wider audience. We want to introduce DIY, especially zines, to people who are curious but hesitant, and then we want them to have a place to talk to people who have been doing it for years.

There is a vibrant zine-making scene in L.A., but like everything else in this wonderful city, zinesters are separated by miles and miles. We want these workshops to be events that bring people together to share what they know. We want to give people a voice and let them know that whatever they want to say, someone will listen.

The way we’re hoping to foster this awesome productive togetherness is through monthly workshops. The workshops build to an exhibition– for example, after two silkscreening workshops, we’ll have a fashion show; after four zine-making workshops, we’ll have an zine show.

Join us in the gallery at Meltdown Comics from 12:30 – 2:30 on Saturday, February 19th to read zines, meet other zine-y people and make your very own mini!

Who is Team False Start? Well I’m glad you asked. Team False Start consists of four lovely ladies, the likes of which being Rhea (of Magick Orchids and Only for the Open Minded), Simon Sotelo (of HireSimon.com), Bianca Barragan (of the zines Things You Can Learn When You Listen to Strangers and Trust Me, I Know What I’m Doing), and yours truly, Meredith Wallace.

RSVP to the event on Facebook. See you there!

On Sunday, December 5th in the gallery @ 3 PM, False Start Independent Books & Zines will host a free screening of “Don’t Need You”, a short documentary about the origins of Riot Grrrl, a feminist punk rock movement from the early 1990’s. Through making music, playing shows and writing zines, Riot Grrrls created a movement centered on creativity, self-expression and making marginalized voices heard. In addition to the screening there will be an art show of work that embodies the do-it-yourself, low art, punk rock spirit of Riot Grrrl.

The documentary is 40 minutes long and there will be zines to browse and buy, some booze to sip on for those that are 21+, and of course, art to look at! It’ll be a fun, relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and remember to bring your snuggie — it can get cold in the gallery!

Head on down to Meltdown on December 5th at 3 PM for awesome zines, art, people and an inspiring documentary. RSVP to the Facebook event page bring your friends and I’ll see you there!
