WASHINGTON—At a press conference Monday, President Obama announced that he had appointed legendary comic book writer Alan Moore as the official biographer of his time in the White House. “As evidenced by his epic run on Swamp Thing #21–64, Moore’s deft hand with both sociopolitical commentary and metaphysical violence makes him an ideal choice to chronicle my time in office,” Obama said of the author of Watchmen and From Hell, whom he reportedly chose over others on a short list of potential biographers that included Warren Ellis, Grant Morrison, and Bob Woodward. “I look forward to seeing the kinds of subplots he will surely weave throughout the main narrative of my presidency, and how he’ll tie them all back together at the end in a way that just elevates the thing to a whole other level. God, that guy is the master.” Although Obama has not yet settled on a publisher for his White House biography, he is reportedly leaning toward DC’s Vertigo imprint for its creator-friendly ethos, high production values, and willingness to publish content for mature readers.

Political collectibles have been loved among collectors for over one hundred years. Cartoons, buttons, jugates, bumper stickers, lawn signs, artwork, and much more have been dedicated to praising, and mocking, the top U.S. office. In recent collecting, items featuring Barack Obama have seen significant appreciation by collectors, already reaching incredible prices. The item next on the list will probably swing high above the rest.
Next Wednesday, on January 14, 2009, Marvel Comics will be releasing a special issue of Spider-Man with a story including Barack Obama. Inside Amazing Spider-Man #583 is the five-page story of the president-elect and Spidey teaming up in the story “Spidey Meets the Presidentâ€.
During the election, Obama stated that Spider-Man and Batman were among his favorite superheroes. His comment was mentioned at children-oriented events, as well as in an Entertainment Weekly pop culture survey he and former Republican candidate John McCain took part in. According to Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada, including him a story was a no brainer, “It was a natural after we learned the new president is a Spider-Man fan,†Quesada said. He added, “Historic moments such as this one can be reflected in our comics because the Marvel Universe is set in the real world. A Spider-Man fan moving into the Oval Office is an event that must be commemorated in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man.â€
Featured as a bonus story in Amazing Spider-Man #583, written by Zeb Wells, with art by Todd Nauck, and Frank D’Armata, an old nemesis of Spider-Man’s tries to ruin the swearing in of our 44th President, Barack Obama. The issue is selling for $3.99 at comic book stores and is expected to be an instant sellout, particularly because the Phil Jimenez cover depicting Obama with Spider-Man is limited to half the run.
