Watch online from the comfort of your own home, our creative cast of Actors, Musicians, Writers, Photographers and Artists play D&D to raise money for Reach out and Read: A charity who’s focus is preparing America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together to promote early literacy.

How does the fundraising part of the evening work?

We will be filming the tables and some of which will be live streamed to http://meltcomics.com where viewers can watch the adventure unravel for a minimum donation of $9.95 from 1pm-6pm. (A PayPerView service from http://stickam.com.) Forward friends and fans to http://Meltcomics.com to gain access. People will also be able to purchase a PDF of the adventure to play with their friends for a minimum donation of $15. We will offer incentives for people to donate more! Items from Wizards of the Coast and other Companies TBA.

What exactly is Reach Out and Read?

http://RORLosAngeles.org Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based nonprofit organization that promotes early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud.

Reach Out and Read builds on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers to develop critical early reading skills in children, beginning at 6 months of age. The 3.8 million families served annually by “Reach Out and Read” read together more often, their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies, with stronger language skills, and better prepared to succeed.

Pediatric healthcare providers (including pediatricians, family physicians, and pediatric nurse practitioners) are trained in the three-part Reach Out and Read model to promote early literacy and school readiness:

  • In the exam room, doctors and nurses speak with parents about the importance of reading aloud to their young children every day, and offer age-appropriate tips and encouragement.
  • The pediatric primary care provider gives every child 6 months through 5 years old a new, developmentally-appropriate children’s book to take home and keep.
  • In the waiting room, displays, information, and gently-used books create a literacy-rich environment. Where possible, volunteer readers entertain the children, modeling for parents the pleasures – and techniques – of reading aloud

Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,
Satine Phoenix
