The show is brimming with goodness today as we welcome aboard Daniel Quantz & R.J. Ryan plus Archaia marketing directer Mel Caylo to the show. We talk their newly released Archaia graphic novel SYNDROME with beautiful art by David Marquez, plus we hash out the production process for a book like this, designing the setting and characters, and how long it all takes to bring to fulfillment.

We then jump in full bore with the creators with this week’s reading pile, including BATMAN AND ROBIN #14, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN, SCARLET, George R.R. Martin’s HEDGE KNIGHT series, AVENGERS, as well as THE HEROIC AGE in general, CAPTAIN AMERICA, Felipe Smith’s PEEPO CHOO vol. 2, X-FACTOR #208, JOE THE BARBARIAN #7, & CBGB #3. Even with guests, passions are enflamed as Caleb raves about THE KUROSAGI CORPSE DELIVERY SERVICE, Aaron can’t believe Black Panther is pinch-hitting for Daredevil, and Chris unfavorably compares Spider-Man: One Moment in Time to Life to Archie-The Married Life.

WELCOME TO LOS ANGELES 2010

(HOPE YOU SURVIVE THE EXPERIENCE!)

Join Meltdown Comics once again for the annual, the legendary, the infamous COMIC CON DECOMPRESSION PARTY
WELCOME TO LOS ANGELES 2010″ Featuring appearances by comic book creators IVAN BRANDON, SAM HUMPHRIES, and FELIPE SMITH! Special appearance and live performance by JANE WIEDLIN of the Go-Go’s and Lady Robotika! Food!  Rock!  New comics fun!

Monday, July 26 at Meltdown Comics, the Comic-Con Decompression Party “WELCOME TO LA 2010″ takes place in grand style as we welcome back our brother Felipe Smith, cartoonist of the brilliant Los Angeles story MBQ and the wonderfully unhinged PEEPO CHOO which sees its first English language translation in print this month.  Felipe left our shores for the distant coasts of Japan on the heels of the Tokyo-Bubble-Pop to pursue production at the source.  His drive and the gamble in his heart led him to creative success and now we raise our glasses as the prodigal son returns home to Meltdown to teach us how to deepen your blacks with squid ink, and drink seawater and spit fire in the face of the gods!

Adding a bit of boss to the sauce will be Jane Wiedlin, one of the world’s greatest songwriters and a deadly talent of the stage.  Jane is a megafan of genre fiction and has brought her terrifying intellect and rock bonafides to bear in the creation of her new comic LADY ROBOTIKA from Image Shadowline.  Jane will be signing her comic and performing a short live set in the Melt Gallery.  Be sure to ask her to tell stories about the days when the Tropicana used to be a live music venue.  Hair-holding hilarity for all!

Representing from New York City in a rare West Coast appearance is Ivan Brandon, writer of VIKING, Batman, and Doc Savage! The sheer size of his impressive tome will rock your socks off. Ask him to sign it sideways for distant viewing.

Local hero Sam “The Hammer” Humphries will be welcoming the walking dead to Los Angeles, signing his new funk-as-puck CBGB comic book from BOOM! Studios! Check it out and get a FREE limited edition art print by Rob G., while supplies last! He’ll also be signing FREE Fraggle Rock posters from Archaia in advance of the highly anticipated Fraggle Rock hard cover.

All of this augmented by snacktasms served up by the Tastymeat! food truck.  Man, I am going to crush a Bamwich the minute I arrive.  Check their wares at www.tastymeat.org prior to your arrival and make that line short so we all get fed!

FELIPE AND PEEPO CHOO!
JANE AND LADY ROBOTIKA!
IVAN AND VIKING!
SAM AND CBGB!
MEAT MEAT MEAT!

Not everyone gets a chance to head to San Diego, so we bring the party to YOU!

We start the show on a somber note, as Sam leads our eulogy of Harvey Pekar.  Then, the train flies off the rails as Caleb returns and we ask the question that cannot be answered – what do comic readers want? We also get an exclusive first look at Taschen Books’ upcoming 75 YEARS OF DC COMICS: THE ART OF MODERN MYTHMAKING (special thanks to Sarah Boyd of Taschen) and feast on a glut of other books: THE NOBODY by Aaron’s favorite cartoonist, Jeff Lemire; DAYTRIPPERS by Ba & Moon, ORC STAIN by James Stokoe, ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS Vol. 1 – NEXT GENERATION by Millar & Pacheco, SCARLET #1 by Bendis & Maleev, PEEPO CHOO by Meltcast fave Felipe Smith, BATMAN #701 by Morrison & Daniel, THE SIXTH GUN by Cullen Bunn & Brian Hurtt, THE MAN WITH THE GETAWAY FACE by Darwyn Cooke, SUPERMAN #701 from JMS & Eddie Barrows, GIRL COMICS #3, and AVENGERS ACADEMY by Gage & McKone.
Reunited… and you know the rest.

Long-time Meltdown institution Felipe Smith (MBQ) recently brought Mel on-air with him when he made a television appearance in Japan to promote his current manga series PEEPO CHOO. Vertical will be printing the series in English starting next month. Trust us, it’s definitely not one to miss!
