April 21st, 2011: Nerdist Sketch Night featuring Diani & Devine plus Stratton & Varney
About Diani & Devine Gabriel Diani and Etta Devine dated for five years before deciding their careers were more important than any damage working together could have on their relationship. Admiring the groundbreaking comedians of the 50′s and 60′s like Nichols and May, Bill Cosby, and Bob Newhart, they set out to create an act that was smart, funny, and (relatively) clean. They recently produced the independent film The Selling, are currently working on a new edition of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” that replaces the n-word with the word “robot”, and developing the second season of their hit web series Mary Olson.

About Stratton, Varney, Nash & Young
He’s the co-host of Rolling Stone’s #2 Best Comedy Podcast, Pop My Culture, and she’s the co-host of TBS’ long-running Friday staple, Dinner and a Movie. Together they’re co-founders of SF Sketchfest, the San Francisco Comedy Festival. And along with the photoshopped images of Graham Nash and Neil Young, they are Stratton, Varney, Nash & Young. So sit back and enjoy some sketch comedy from Cole Stratton and Janet Varney. Or at least tolerate them, as it will all be over in 30-ish minutes.

April 23, 2011: Don’t Stop or We’ll Die @MeltdownComics
After tearing up comedy stages all over LA, Don’t Stop or We’ll Die, the piano-pop trio featuring Harris Wittels, Michael Cassady, and Paul Rust, is finally getting a night to themselves. Come watch them play a full concert that’s equal parts badass and hilarious, with an opening act so big we can’t even mention her here. Trust me, you won’t want to miss this show. Don’t Stop or We’ll Die will have their CD, One of the Gang, available for sale, and if you’re lucky one of the guys will sign your chest.

Summer! What does it mean to you? Sun in your eyes? Sand in your crack? Comedian Howard Kremer has a few ideas, which he’s been trumpeting since right around the time spring petered out if you follow him on Twitter.

It seems only fitting that Kremer would take over the reigns of this month’s Meltdown Comics’ comedy showcase from regular emcee Jonah Ray – oh, but the sultan of SUMMAH! wasn’t the only special feature of Saturday’s stand-up shindig. Free barbecue and brew w/ admission? Oh, yes please.

IMG_0573.jpgEli Braden gets a harmony assist from Ed Salazar

Kicking off an hour before the usual start time, the crowd gathered in Meltdown’s back parking lot to grub on chicken and ribs while comedy singer/songwriter Eli Braden serenaded them with a setlist of songs with ‘Summer’ in the title… or songs that were played non-stop during summer. (Which explains “Wonderwall,” we guess, though it’s hard to top “Boys of Summer.” Oh, po-faced Don Henley. You were on top of the world for three months in 1985.) Some folks enjoyed the bean-bag toss while attempting not to spill their beers, and a well-placed neighbor having a smoke on his balcony nearby occasionally belted out a chorus or two in time (and in tune!) with the music. (If you’re reading this and were there, did that dude ever come down and attempt to crash? We were kind of hoping he would.)
