The Meltcast welcomes two new members to the team – Pop Culture Bon Vivant and Contributor for LA Weekly, Nicole Campos, and Emmy-award winning writer & producer Peter Murrieta (Wizards of Waverly Place, Hope & Faith) – while welcoming back Sam “The Hammer” Humphries from the injured list!  We discuss Peter’s Improv show, The Murrieta Gang, now running at the Bang Theater, the problems translating comics to other media, the upcoming Walking Dead TV series and its implications for comics, and coin a new phrase: ‘Minorities in Matchbooks”.

Dustin David aims his propeller limbs at Jonah Ray’s recycling.

Just one week from today, geek brethren: Matthew Vaughn’s much anticipated, controversial, madder-than-a-hatter and — judging by the early reactions — all-but-assured cult classic adaptation of Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass barrels its way into theaters. In the spirit of home-spun vigilante heroism, the intrepid crew of Meltdown Comics held an event Wednesday night with an eye toward giving any and all local candidates for grass-roots ass-kickery a chance to shine and prove to the world they’ve got what it takes to put a boot in the hiney of… well, any hiney that requires booting, really. With the backup of Comics on Comics, Geekscape and Lionsgate Films, Meltdown cleared as much space as possible in their back gallery space (No mean feat – lots of room breadth-wise but those ceilings are low. And dude, don’t kick the artwork!), set up cameras, called in some judges and enticed the masses with gooey fried goodness from the Frysmith french-fry truck… all to find out who among Hollywood faithful had what it takes – with only a minute to demonstrate — just how they are capable of kicking ass.

Meltdown Comics, Lionsgate Films, Comics on Comics, CC2K and Geekscape Invite You to Shut Up And Kick Ass!

SHUT-UP AND KICK-ASS!

That’s what Lionsgate Films is asking of every fan within the blast radius of Meltdown Comics in Hollywood, Calif., along with Comics on Comics, CC2K and Geekscape. They’re inviting everyone with the nerve to show off their asskicking skills to come down to Meltdown at 7 p.m. Wednesday April 7 and perform for a panel of judges that includes comedian/actress Shannon Hatch and Comics on Comics Radio Host and comedian Sax Carr, as well as several other special guests. It’s all in celebration of the new movie Kick-Ass from Lionsgate.

Each contestant will get one minute to demonstrate their kills for the judges. Entrants are invited to do whatever they want – as long as it kicks ass. Martial artists, comedians, dancers and raconteurs of all stripe are welcome to come out. Just don’t suck.

In fact, we dare you.

Everyone will be taped, and a video of their performance will appear on Meltdown’s official blog, with additional publicity on Comics on Comics and CC2K. The denizens of the mighty Internet will then elect their favorite asskickers.

That’s when the prizes come out to play. Here they are:

• The first place winner will get a pair of tickets to opening night of Kick-Ass.

• Second place gets a $200 gift certificate to Meltdown Comics.

• Third place gets a pair of tickets to a Kick-Ass-themed burlesque show.

• Ten runners-up will get an awesome bag of Kick-Ass movie swag, courtesy of the fine folks at Lionsgate Films.

NOTE: Entrants must be at least 18 years old and living in Los Angeles to be eligible for prizes.

That’s it! Once again, here are the details:

Jonah Ray’s MELTDOWN. Friday, March 19th. at 8PM $8 bux!

MELTDOWN. This will be a fun show. Please come out and reblog and spread the word. It’s a great line up: Whitney Cummings. I’m not sure if you saw her on the Joan Rivers roast but she completely dominated. She’s got such a great stage presence with really punchy jokes to back it up. Recently she starred in a pilot Produced by Ben Stiller, Directed by David Wain, and co-starring John Goodman. Duncan Trussell. Duncan just recently wrapped up writing for NICK SWARDSONS sketch show on Comedy Central and has been progressively been becoming my favorite comic to see. One of the smartest and funniest guys around. Eric Appel. Eric has been consistently pumping out amazing sketches since starting up on the Andy Milonakis Show back in 2005. Recently, he’s written on Crank Yankers, Human Giant and has been responsible for some of my favorite videos on FUNNY OR DIE, where he is a staffed Writer/Producer/Director. On top of that you can see him perform every sunday with Community’s Donald Glover at the UCB Theatres SHITTY JOBS. K.P. Anderson. K.P. has been the Executive Producer and Head Writer of THE SOUP w/ Joel McHale for the past 5 years. Having been able to work side by side with him has been a delight. He regularly opens up for Joel McHale all across the country. Come see his rare L.A. appearance. Brent Weinbach. Ask any comic that has performed with Brent and they will tell you ONLY good things. One of the more quoted and referenced comedians within the comedy community. I often find myself trying to describe his bits to friends and am always falling short of being able to. It truly is only something that you have to experience live. Plus Special Guest: STEVE AGEE. Steve, a regular cast member on the Sarah Silverman Program is a wreck. One of the funniest hypochondriacs you will ever come across. Steve will swing by to talk about why he might just be about to die or almost just did. This is a show full of headliners and I couldn’t be more happy to show them to everybody who comes. This is handpicked comedy.
