It’s been an amazing year for our favorite genre and choosing the best of the best was no easy task.  This year’s Golden Melty list was comprised from multiple “Best of” lists, sell-through numbers, reviews, Publisher’s Weekly lists and combing through dozens of message boards to hear what true comic fans are saying.  So, without further ado, the nominees are:

Studios, and for writing a number of their titles, including the acclaimed dark superhero series Irredeemable. Mark spent about an hour giving an informal talk about constructing stories, while also giving key advice about writing techniques and things to know that are specific to comics.  Both the writer/artists and the script writers had the chance to ask questions which Mark responded to with great information.  Mark and I batted around some thoughts on plotting and building character and how to play to the strengths of the comics medium.  I want to thank Mark for taking the time to come down and share his time. The Boom! crew are frequent visitors to Meltdown and have had signings and other events at the store.  We like to think of Mark as one of the professional community’s “Friends ‘O Meltdown.”  Thanks for stopping by, Mark!

If you’re interested in taking a class at Meltdown University we offer two types: one is a series where you have the choice of writing and drawing an eight to ten-page minicomic or writing a twelve to fourteen-page comics script; the other is a basic drawing class where artists can come and learn the fundamentals to apply to any type of drawing or art.  Though it will touch on doing comics, that series is  more of a straight art class.  The next comics-making series starts on Monday, February 22 and the next Drawing Basics class will begin sometime in April and will meet on Saturdays. LOS ANGELES – January 12th, 2009 – Always wanted Mark Waid to ring up your weekly comics purchase so you can pry industry gossip out of him? Well, come to Meltdown Comics and Collectibles for the remaining Wednesdays in January and you just might get your wish.

This past week, BOOM! Studios surprised the Wednesday night crowd at Meltdown Comics and Collectibles by working the floor at the Los Angeles comic shop in support of BOOM!’s recent HEXED on MySpace/Comic Books promotion.

In fact, every Wednesday for the rest of January, Meltdown’s customers will find BOOM! staffers at the store – helping to sell not just HEXED but all the latest comic releases.

Last week saw the release of BOOM!’s latest comic HEXED #1 on MySpace.com/Comicbooks on the same date the comic hit store shelves. The announcement was made by E-i-C Mark Waid in a video on YouTube HERE.

“Some of the best times I had growing up came from hanging at my LCS on new comic book day. We just thought what better way to support the release of HEXED than spending our Wednesday evenings helping out at Meltdown?” said Marketing and Sales Director Chip Mosher. “And hey, who doesn’t like to get paid to hang out at comic book store?”

The first night the BOOM! team members were out in force at Meltdown, they got some nice surprises when they met regular customer Percy Carey a.k.a. rapper MF Grimm, author of DC/Vertigo’s SENTENCES. Some of BOOM!’s own rising talents like Gabriel Hardman (ZOMBIE TALES #4) and Pierluigi Cothran (ZOMBIE TALES #6 and #10) also stopped by to get their weekly comics fix.

In the end, BOOM! staffers not only talked up the arrival of HEXED but also heard from fans about what keeps bringing them back every week. And hearing from fans is what makes working in comics so special.
