On Friday, November 4th at 7pm, it’s an evening for your bucket list.

Come on down and meet a unicorn!

…more specifically, you can meet Mr. Lemonade ‘Unicorn’ Steiny and the guy who draws him, C.W. Moss. We’re hosting the nationwide launch of two glorious things: Unicorn Being A Jerk, Moss’ new book from HarperCollins, and the premiere of The F*** Was That: A Unicorn Documentary, directed by Andrew Rivera. During this night of bliss, Unicorn, also an ordained minister, will be marrying people who purchase his book and happen to believe in undying love.

Get out your tiny scissors and microscopic glue! We need a MILLION Minis!

What we at False Start Presents are trying to do here is to foster a sense of community among DIYers in Los Angeles and help that attitude spread to a wider audience. We want to introduce DIY, especially zines, to people who are curious but hesitant, and then we want them to have a place to talk to people who have been doing it for years.

There is a vibrant zine-making scene in L.A., but like everything else in this wonderful city, zinesters are separated by miles and miles. We want these workshops to be events that bring people together to share what they know. We want to give people a voice and let them know that whatever they want to say, someone will listen.

The way we’re hoping to foster this awesome productive togetherness is through monthly workshops. The workshops build to an exhibition– for example, after two silkscreening workshops, we’ll have a fashion show; after four zine-making workshops, we’ll have an zine show.

Join us in the gallery at Meltdown Comics from 12:30 – 2:30 on Saturday, February 19th to read zines, meet other zine-y people and make your very own mini!

Who is Team False Start? Well I’m glad you asked. Team False Start consists of four lovely ladies, the likes of which being Rhea (of Magick Orchids and Only for the Open Minded), Simon Sotelo (of HireSimon.com), Bianca Barragan (of the zines Things You Can Learn When You Listen to Strangers and Trust Me, I Know What I’m Doing), and yours truly, Meredith Wallace.

RSVP to the event on Facebook. See you there!

The interest and demand for superhero stories in movies and TV is only increasing.  As I write this, the show No Ordinary Family is on ABC which is about a family of superheroes, Stan Lee is putting together a super-web series that they plan to bring to TV, and people are buzzing in anticipation about the Green Lantern, Thor, and Avengers movies.  Not to mention, the recent Spider-man, Brave and the Bold, Iron Man, Avengers, and Marvel Superheroes cartoons. Superheroes are all the rage.

Come to this special one-day Meltdown University workshop, Screenwriting and Superheroes, and learn how to write your own original script with super people, or know what to do when you get that job writing for an existing character.  For budding scriptwriters and pros alike!

This workshop is being taught by Jim Higgins, formerly of DC Comics editorial, who has 17 years in the comic book business and years of teaching experience at places like CalArts, Otis College of Art and Design, and The School of Visual Arts Cartooning program.
