NINE NINE NINE

END OF LINE

Commentary by Marz Richards for Meltdown Blog.

I’m not stupidstitous but I do believe in magic.  I think it just depends on where your definition of magic lives.  For example, Nine Nine Nine. Known as Wednesday to most of us, this September 9 of 2009 is getting a greater deal of flapdoodle hung upon it than what one can recall from 9.9.99 (well, except for the great impromptu party Gretzky threw at the Frolic, but that’s what a werewolf mask will do for you.)  You get a whole lot of people focused on one moment, odd things start to happen.

Every nine minutes nine economists say September will be shaky nine times.  Astrologists simultaneously love and hate the number nine.  If you are Western in your inclinations then a stellar hurricane is crossing our path.  If you are looking at the stars from a Vedic view then 9 is nice and representative of Lord Brahma.  Lesser deities such as the Beatles reverberate through time by releasing re-mastered versions of their catalogue and re-imagined moments in their lives on Rock Band, all of this on 9.9.09.  Which is odd marketing as 999 is the emergency help line in the UK.

The powers that be (and that panda) have been very worried about this particular September for many moons.  But you shouldn’t worry.  There’s all manner of good things coming our way, but from the day of the Devil’s Handstand on, we have to watch our footing and pick our path carefully lest we go the way of all fools.

Here in L.A. the show of the day is Victory Variety Hour at Bordello (check www.itsachick.com.)  It’s no secret why the show is so special: everybody associated with the production is working their ass off.  VVH is bad-ass because they consistently bring together the disparate elements of Los Angeles entertainment in one simmering bouillabaisse.  There are at any time approximately 5,000 bands operating in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.  A booking such as VVH speaks well of the quality show a band would be capable of delivering.  And if by quality, you mean a deranged bi-pedal singing simian swinging from a disco ball crooning the American Party Songbook, then you are talking about the Fuxedos! Lucky us, the Fux are popping up in-between the acts at Victory Variety Hour.  www.myspace.com/thefuxedos

9 9 09 WTF!

This whole week is shifted about.  There’s a Thursday comic delivery and heavy happenings all over the store that are screwing with the schedule.  But it is apparent that people are trying to keep things on track.  We have Presidential addresses and Apple keynote speeches going off in the same week that USC travels to Ohio State and the end of the pre-season for the NFL.  But even though Meltdown is CLOSED FRIDAY for the Sarah Silverman shoot, we will have a new comics sale on Saturday and Sunday to make up for interrupting your frivolity with televised madness.  See you in the store.

THURSDAY OPEN NEW ISSUE DAY 10 am to 11 pm GALLERY CLOSE.
FRIDAY, SEPT. 11 CLOSED ALL DAY.
SATURDAY STORE OPEN 10 am to 11 pm GALLERY CLOSE.
SUNDAY OPEN 10 am to 11 pm GALLERY CLOSE.
MONDAY BACK TO REGULAR BIZ!
